First
generation of cellular networks called 1G started in early 1980s. It consisted
of analog systems capable of carrying only voice.
In 1990s, second generation networks (2G) started.2G network
supported voice as well as data transmission. 2G
introduced a variety of new features such as push-to-talk, SMS, conference
calling, caller ID, voicemail ,email messaging and Web browsing.
Third generation networks (3G), are newer cellular networks
that have data rates of 384kbit/s and more. As a result 3Gs can support more
demanding multimedia applications, videos and also faster browsing and data
transfers and downloads. The main difference between 2G and 3G networks is faster
data speeds offered by 3G.
Fourth generation networks (4G) which started recently supports
speeds upto 100mbps to 1 gbps.
